Voting in India? Sites to get information about candidates

via (http://empoweringindia.org)

• Did you know that the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, declared financial assets worth Rupees 4 crore in the 2004 state elections whereas in the affidavit filed for 2008 Karnataka assembly elections to the election commission, he disclosed Rupees 40 crore?
• The present Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Sushri Mayawati, declared assets worth over Rupeess  50 crore in 2007, when she contested for a seat in the UP legislative council, but when she had  contested the election for the Lok Sabha in 2004,  she had declared assets worth Rupees 5 crore.
• In the 2004 general election, about 1,000 candidates out of over 5,000 had declared
assets of over Rupees 1 crore. But only 136 of  these crorepatis actually made it to
Parliament. There are over 800 MLAs around the  country with declared assets over one crore.

Sites for getting more information on election/candidates etc.

(updated – 16 Mar 2009) Attendence record of MPs (India) – http://ibnlive.in.com/politics/stats/mp_attendance_2004.php

Latter provides excel sheets about candidates and their disclosures.

Electoral roll challenges – http://indiatogether.org/2008/mar/gov-rolls.htm You will see this but try to remember enumeration/verification is done by people who are working in less than perfect conditions (no consistent house numbering scheme, no proper road numbers , non availability of to scale actual recent maps – more of a challenge in urban areas).

Kind of challenges

- name misspelled in different languages
- name repeated with different house #
- people from same house placed in different section thus having to go to different polling booth
- invalid entries

One can find these challenges across the nation and these can be minimized by preventing bad data entry, forcing citizens to be more proactive in updating their data as they move, adding easier access to the information and simpler verification at the local level and way to push this feedback into the system(something which janagraaha tries to do with sabhas etc).

Travesty of tragedy

As Chetan mentioned the delinquent media folks unleashed a terror campaign of their own with 45 hours non stop  verbal diarrhea.  I have never big fan of Barakha and her ilk acting condescendingly – I have put my views earlier last year.  They showered us with dumb, idiotic and disrespectful “commentry – a confused talkathon of their  peanut sized brain” and pushing the forces/harried hostages to provide sound bite. They had audacity of calling this event as India’s 9/11 as if algeria/Munich or own older sufferings were not “good enough”. They reached the zenith of incompetance when they provided running breaking news and headlines like

1. Ladega india

2. War on Mumbai

3. Terror unleashed

4. Mumbai under xxxx

5. War on India

6. India ki jung

They had audacity of putting blaring music like a cheap show from Ekta Kapoor and tried matching the witless Karan johar kind of movies with dramatic angles and unrelated, useless shots. The real heroes were the camera man who unleashed camera movements like never before and enjoyed unfrettered access to the hotel’s outside and the backend producers/production folks added the zing through rasterization, saturation, colors of blood and repeatition of the video – specially the van with shooters. (same guys produce the dumb criminal shows in the night anyway with bearded or clean shaven bamboostic hosts)

Thanks folks(NDVT, AajTak, CNN-IBN, SAhara, India News, ….) – you have desensitized an entire generation. (Update – Tehelka has better collected view on desensitization)

I am sure your bank balances are ringing billions as you took that vital break by requesting us to wait :) hey let us play that ad.

Thanks for matching Ekta kapoor/Karan Johar for loudness/shrillness by  melodramatizing, asking silly , unresearched questions, goading the relatives to talk to hostages inside and giving their positions, showing and getting excited by the landing of the commandoes on rooftops(cnn-ndtv bimbos – actually said – this is like in holly wood movies – how exciting and dramatic and pushing the cameraman to break the perimeter – getting and touching the curtains at different angles – is that reporting?).

Thanks for inviting biased policitians/dumb bollywood folks and asking for the sound bytes. BJP’s Jaswant singh could not wait to push his displeasure about the inordinate delay. He conveniently forgot the Kandahar incident which started this. The Moily wanted to spin it. Amar Singh/Arjun Singh/Paswan/Mulayam singh and Thackrey clan remained shut inside without a single interview.

Western Media is amazing as usual – I now belive more of Israel when they complain of bias against them by BBC etc.

Western media painted as if this was important since only westerners were targeted(across us/uk/australia).They conveniently forgot there were lot of brown skinned commoners whose lives were abrupted.  Screw you folks ! You are no better than our dumb media.

Height of cnn’s impotence was Mr Chopra’s interview and his condescending advice for us to “work” with neighbour. He had balls to suggest that Hindu reprisal was due and he was sure Hindu extremists were involved earlier.  Just when did he become expert on foreign relations, India. Nobody gives him dog’s behind in India or elsewhere…

Off course there were “experts” talking about how India has always blamed a certain country and how minorites are treated here etc etc. And this event could be blamed for it.

Screw you folks – when it happens to you – you come and carpet bomb a country of existence, make up the WMD presence and install a puppet, you go ahead and send the “unmanned predators” to swipe the land clean off culprits.

Everybody knows one roadside nuclear arms trader Mr. A. Q. Khan, everybody knows the role of ISI over the years. When it happens over the years to us – it is somehow not true, it needs to be verified, it needs to be narrowed down to secluded vision like “Hindu India”  – “Right wing party “. When do we call republicans – right wing, when do we call you folks christian america?  You want to advice us not to escalate this, not to take action to destabilize the peace? What and which peace?

Christiane amanpour puts across her own views compared to the facts. How did these folks become journalists – Where is NPR/DD/AIR quality, stoic and insightful. Yes they were biased a little but less on rhetoric and emergency of 3 year old kid in the new found wonderland.

These arm chair experts, media nuts should hang their head in shame as they brought down the bar in every sense.

[updated] – faking news has great information.  I for one cannot forget why guardian/bbc/cnn quickly term everything on “themselves” as terrorist attacks but in India as unidentified gunmen/(no calling terrorists will be politically incorrect and saudi fund rolling will stop – does it sound like flamebait ? Off course it is – I am sick and tired of their biased view and condesceding behavior. ) For that matter sitting in Sydney the Australian media described the Indonesia as terror hub but this does not seem to be – it comes with all the “extra” information.

Balvinder captured it earlier wonderfully – Balvinder Singh’s description about what media was doing when Manekshaw died. Do not believe their “talk shows”/opinion polls. It feels revolting.

[update] Tehelka has the media on hook.

Skewed priorities – No deodorants 3 decades ago to 400 M Euros in Brazil

Brazillian poor rural folks have challenge of access to sustainable sanitation facility. But there’s an mnc(Unilever) which is selling them deodorant to overcome the smell of the bodies.

While reading one of the economist article – Feb 2nd 2008, I was appalled by it’s tone and implication of treating “people” as potential customers. Most probably they will lure the customer by raunchy/racy ads and making them feel bad about themselves.

Anyway coming back to the article – Company’s next big target are the asians – only 7 out of 100 of them use deodorants. That is alluring. Forget the fact that many of them have challenge getting water, sanitation, access to lower priced drugs. But heck – they need latest deodorant and shampoo to get the water and sanitation.

Challenge here is – what are the ethics and how far you will stretch them for blind benefit. There is nothing wrong in selling deodorants but don’t push them by hoodwinking folks at large. Certainly not to the person thinking about the next square meal or education for the kids. Are perfumes and deodorants so neccasary a priority? Don’t even get started on role of the MNC which push/sell the aereated drinks in arid regions.

Extreme secularism – No Ram, no Jesus, no Mohammed, No Budha, No culture symbols

I did not know even British were following the French tomfoolery of enforcing extreme secularism code.  This is dumb and the reason given to suspend a person desire much to be discussed. In place like India this will not be enforceable, even the smallest government office carries the imagery of God of various forms.

I remember Saudi’s and the related countries do not allow any form of worship or imagery other than one “supposedly” “right” religion for strange reason. Commercial firms (all worthy of good capitalistic tag) of all hues and national origin seem to work without problem.  This points to simple fact, everything is negotiable to either side. The negotiation need to happen at right time.

Indo-US Nuclear deal – the saga of confused left , brash right with common man’s warrior

When I started this blog, I always wondered whether it would be intelligent and desirable for me to post on the matters which are bigger than me. But what the heck. Here it goes.

Off late left seems to have lost the hold of the reality in terms of whom does it represent. From the junkyard bastions of communism which has faded across the world and pure hate for country and people without ever meeting/talking working with them. They are more of “ism-terrorists”. They try to scuttle everything which reeks of free spirit and step ahead. Ignore or wash away lenin/stalin/Mao’s excesses and burn camphor at the altar of Islamic nations which never really supported anything closely liberal or independent view of the world. While doing so they think they are the gift of the god to the world and when people do not listen they become voilent mobs with large scale mob hysteria generated through percieved persecution.

Let us digress to see why left sounded cool in lense of history at some distant era of time and how it has lost it to Arundhatis/Karat/Bardhan/Hugos(btw – lookup ”american leftist linguist” in favourite search engine) of the world. The worldview and perception has been based on twisted one narrow point – hate US of A. Not very far from the militant Islamic right view point of the wahhabi and lately the shia view.  This seems to be shared philosophy generating kinship of dangerous  kind.

The challenge with this is many fold, but simpler thing being loss of touch with ground reality very similar to generation of people who have lost the bearings and find Sanjay and Salman boys (they are over 40 and very similar to millions others who lost parent/love and everything else they held close) and cute and pardonable.

What Indian left did good

1. Left stood for personal integrity(lot of intellectual types ended up confused here) and reforms for poor peasant and did good job in Kerala and W.Bengal with great difficulty

2. Left kept education and health as the primary focus areas resulting in crop of educated young folks at least in Kerala looking for jobs.

3. Left tried to provide a conscience check in labor challenges and lately in form of tacit support to naxal movement to “unshining folks”.

4. Left had secular/non corrupt credentials by having people on merit before it got into pit of shxt of Vijayans/Basu(son)/Naxals terrorizing the locals for money like petty criminals.

5. Learnt the art of co-existing with Surjeet singh

What Indian left sucked on and lost the the warmth of the middle class people across India

1. Forgot that India is deeply religious country and its unchecked attack on the social and cultural fabric resulted in confused message. It is more like the Islamic conversion, once you convert you give up everything from old world, the god, the way of walking, eating, dressing, talking etc.

2. Did not support the nuclear activity of Indira Gandhi (more than half of the left folks are against nuclear weapons and war in general) and now claim to be protector of the nuclear independence strategey.

3.  Supported the Chinease/Soviet view of the world through the ages (how was CPM born anyone? – we need to digitize the documents/newspapers of the comrades :) so that future generation has grasp of the reality. ) without ever thinking we have the ability to move out and become better till wipro/infosys showed the path. Which of the communist/islamic countries have what we need and do reliable business with. Do they have good laws to protect IP, fair protection to buisines folks. Oil will come any which way. They need to sell !

4. Forgot that most of the general population of the country is a independent businessman and wants to be such rather than working for government. There is huge chunk which has been dependent on government doleouts and jobs becuase of percieved/real indiscrimation and lethargy.  Notice how many communists survive in the business/enterprenurial world? The challenge is leftists take the pessimisstic view of the world and certain folks decide to do something about it, in this mess leftists are content to stay behind and just shout aloud.

5.  Never gave credence to India’s needs, just recently Mr. Bardhan/Karat/Yechury yelled and expounded about the fact that we should not deal with Israel who is set to become biggest arms supplier for us. Heck what world they are living in. They were more worried about how badly islamic world will percieve us !!!! Gasp. Sorry did you folks forget that Saudi/Egypt are closer to Israelis than anyone of us ever can be? Did you forget about the clandestine meeting of Pakistani meetings with Israel and tacit support for each other under garb of cornering Shia Iran? And when did last These bunch of countries produce a democratically elected official, have respect for other faith(ok communists don’t have gods but we normal people do believe in some of them , try carrying hindu faith and practice it, try creating a temple for your folks), provide respectable path of evolution for women from their tyrant polygamous societies. Heck are these the role model countries for us (ignore Malaysia – but they also have the moral forces very much like the ones in the East german stasi – lest people do not follow the code :) )

6. Did not value individual merit, competition and denied transparency of any kind. Just like the autocratic dictators wanted to rule through the politburo decisions and unfriendly laws. This resulted in nepotism, corruption and mass murder seen everywhere. Since work could be always done through the bullet.

What left can do

1. Take up moral corruption of the babudom /politics and raise a new banner. Since this will involve their bread and butter supporters/flagbearers hard sell will be required. This will endear you to the masses who suffer it everyday in and out at every possible place.

2. Welcome competition with good overview and set of overseer/shaming the firm policies. You can’t have card bearers beating up people to give up land and then travel to another place and protest against land being given to industry.

3. Recognize the world has changed and new challenges of valuing the human and labor have come to par.  How do goods travel from one place another, how do we add value, why Singapore makes more money by providing efficient systems for investment/business.

4. Recognize the world has changed and don’t force the views of 60s. Present  generation which has been raised on interaction with other world -culturally/workwise will not find facts in them.  Don’t just oppose everything under name of imperialism, that sounds so out of touch. IF nazis/stalins had ruled us – what do you think we would have been.

5. Recognize that China as 133 $ Trillion  in reserves and does brisk trade with US of A and every capitalist company worth its salt is present in China either selling to local populace (check out GM success, walmart, big name fashion and hotel chains of all kind).

6. Remember that Soviet union of Putin needs the markets of the western Europe and Oligarch have had great run in the “reformed” former KGB den. Putin has been turning its back on media freedom, political dissent etc.

7.  Travel the world and see the change. Your shell has become a curse.

8. Everything with private tag – don’t blame it evil. If that was the case we would have still suffered the Bajaj, fiat, ambassador. We would have not had world class service companies of the likes of wipro/tcs/infosys. Do not ignore the success of the non-it related companies as they spread the wings. Push for competition, don’t protect the holy cows without proper checks and balances. This applies to insurance, retail, banking, infrastructure. It does not cost a dime to be pragmatic and practical to help another generation take a leap. Help them with the background of challenges but do not oppose for the heck of it.

9. Your world view and kinship with other communist movement is great, but challenge is world has always had one or another dominant power, it pays to look for our goals and requirements to achieve the good for us rather be always arrogant without knowing the position where we are talking from. Do not deny another generation the benefits of moving ahead or security.

10. Have a clear cut policy on minority appeasement, in the recent taslima nasreen case not even one voice was heard from the party of any kind, whereas there is always some one speaking against the rss every other day. People may not have long memory but they connect the dots and form a perception. Have a policy on Arunachal pradesh/Kashmir/Naxal and behave like responsible power sharing partner.

11.  Understand the economy of scale and look at the proliferation of the consumer brands , push by all means for farmers but for god’s sake work with them to aim for bridging the gap rather than arm chair opposition to retail reforms. Have checks and balance mechanism to prevent fraudelent practices.

12. Consumer oriented economy is here to stay unless people think otherwise.

 To balance out the post

The most hated  country’s foreign policies have had long history of no oversight of the civilian population inspite the democracy tag. CIA and friends of conservative right over the years have committed excesses in Latin America in name of uprooting communism/drugs by working pushing banana republics and dumber folks as dictators.

The step in Iraq of the neo-conservatives without adequately taking people in confidence and forcing a lesson on the world has boomranged.   The focus should have been al-qeada and supporting organizations and countries which helped Taliban in initial stages.

The oil companies,  auto firms did not improve the alternative fuels/efficient engines for long time inspite of opportunities and relied on the middle east thus making it the flashpoint for “influence” across unstable region.

The support for the apartheid practices was the worst point of the reagan era which otherwise was more conservative in governance area.

The continued upmanship to contain China, India, Iran has been played out to galleries for long time.

The democracy in Uncle Sam’s country has had chasm with two philosophies which do not allow other viewpoints or centrist approach, why can’t person carry a gun and still listen to Rock, grow long hair and support abortion ? Unfortunately the voter enrollment itself enforces you to toe a line and identifies you. This allows the political parties flush with funds from “influencers” to target the areas with appropriate candidates and campaigns. For what it is worth – Rove’s maneovouring resulted in land slide control of legislation and judciary land for decade till the dreams of banishing liberals for another generation were halted by foolhardy venture into Iraq. Half of the battles are fought in the courts.

Capitalism’s mecca has had its follies resulting in grave widening of gap between have and have nots.  The enron like scandals re-affirmed the fact that lack of ethics/morality is not hegemony of the controlled economies. A middle path needs to be found where dependence is less and independence with support for needy is setup.

The opportunistic ways of the political bosses to whip trade protection and push others to open up does not translate well in a good message.

Finally I believe our Parliament too needs the productive debate on the deal rather than George fernandes shooting a bullet into Manmohan singh’s head (somebody needs to tell him that china already has 123 agreement with supposedly not good conditions).

Indian Media Excess – OJ series in India continues unabated

Mid-day reported how kidnapped person’s father held Media responsible for his son’s murder.  Lately Indian media specially the television has become hyper reality show with cooked up “supporters/viewers”, hours of unabated “report of music competition”, “product launches” etc and occasional get together of “people” talking about issues.

Today’s Indian media is shrill, over the top, unreliable muckracker and has  flimsy credibility.  The top stories for the tv media has been never ending “Great Indian OJ saga” consisting of Salman Khan (a film actor with history of bad/dumb behavior gaining sympathy at dumber viewer/fan’s cost) and Sanjay Dutt(Another film actor with penchant for anything on borderline of legal stuff).

It is utterly apalling to see both of these people get sympathy from “viewers”.  Anyway – One was indicted for crime after 13 years of holding an automatic weapon. Another one was let off on charges of drunken driving and mauling over people on the street as witness turned hostile(similar to Nanda’s- a former  naval officer’s name inheritor -mowing down 7 folks in Delhi). Salman was indicted in sleepy city of Jodhpur where a local tribe considers everything with life more than God. This man was caught killing Chinkara. At present the sympathy+appeal consists of pathetic attempt to get him off by saying many more people have killed others why he should be punished. Sanjay dutt tries to shave off his bad behavior saying he lost his mother, his father was good indian, he tried to protect his family by getting a gun from a mobster.

I would say inspite of assumed harsh sentences, these two folks should be treated guilty and serve the sentences. No questions asked.  Otherwise it will be always chicken and egg problem, nobody except the poor and without links will ever get punished and they will grow disillusioned with the illusion of system.

The role of the media in both cases was limited to

1. Running around the police van and shouting to give “views”

2. Sending breaking news about what the person was given to eat/wear/sleep

3. Breaking news with cell number of the prison

4. Breaking news of who met him/what they talked or witness who saw person inside/what he was doing inside today at this moment

5.  Interviews with friends and “well wishers” who justify how nice each one of them was – watching this was re-enactment of the earlier days of OJ trial.

6.   Interviews with astrologers on what is the “dasha”(Status) for these stars etc

Not even one tried to respect the judiciary and  present the facts and the impact of not allowing the law. Offcourse  good work was done uncovering scams(politicians asking for money for asking questions), shoddy trial(Jessica murder) etc. But they completely overlooked soldiers dying on border, sibu soren getting reprieve in presence of strong evidence.

The recent nuclear deal saga met its pit when one of the channel(aajtak) did a survey among astrologers to predict the dangers for the government. Heck not even one intelligent journalist worth the bread was around.

That brings me to the hot debate of recent weeks – should India sign the nuclear deal? This deserves another post.
